C1600 SCHLESWIG-HOLSTEIN
Renaissance carved oakwood chest, Germany
Renaissance carved oakwood chest, Germany
A bit outside of our normal offerings - but just couldn't resist the history and detail of this chest. Produced c1600 during the period of high Renaissance in Northern Europe as it transitioned to Baroque style in the 17th century. This solid oakwood chest was made to last. Hand-carved figural and floral details everywhere. Bearded men, cherubs and bounty of food. Opens at top with internal compartments. Hammered iron handles to both sides. Top, some side panels, beveled lower base and heavy pad feet are all later additions though likely reproductions of the original. Produced in the Schleswig-Holstein region of Germany, c1600.
