1960S LUCIEN URCOLANI
Model 355 studio couch, elm & beech, England
Model 355 studio couch, elm & beech, England
Italian-born and raised in England, Lucien Ercolani (1888-1976) founded Furniture Industries in High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire, in 1920 (later Ercol) one of Britain's most recognizable modern manufacturers that adapted historical craft into contemporary and accessible furntiure. The "Studio Couch" was designed in 1956 with a sculpted solid elmwood backboard mounted to beech supports that can be removed - converting to a single bed. The steam-bent wood rails and slender spindles reinterpret the English Windsor chair. Produced 1960s-1970s, England.
