Model 31/42 "Spring Chair" in black, Finland
Finnish Alvar Aalto (1898–1976) was a central figure in modern architecture and furniture design, developing a more organic approach to modernism through the use of natural materials, curved forms and attention to human comfort. His Model 31 chair had a breakthrough use of two continuous laminated-birch side frames supporting a blackened suspended plywood shell. Originally designed in 1932 and was intended for the Paimio sanatorium's common rooms. For this reason is also known as the Paimio chair. Later production under Model 42. Finland.
