Model 401 bent birch tallback armchair, Artek
One of Alvar Aalto's (1898-1976) most innovative designs using bent birchwood as an alternative to the tubular steel that retains strong structural integrity. Working alongside his wife Aino - Model 401 was deigned 1933-1935 using laminated Finnish birch veneers that are steam-bent into continuous side frames which function as both arm and leg support. Sculptural tall-back design with mini-wings and a buttoned back and classic striped upholstery. This is a later 20th to early 21st century production by Aalto's founded manufacturer, Artek - Turku/Littoinen area of southwestern Finland.
