pair of late Gustavian painted pinewood side chairs
pair of late Gustavian painted pinewood side chairs
The Gustavian style emerged in Sweden during the late eighteenth century under King Gustav III, who introduced the Neoclassical fashions of France to the Swedish court and were then interpreted in simpler forms and local materials by regional Swedish makers This pair of side chairs in carved pinewood are centered by distinctive open backs with fluted splats and carved rosette medallions. Fine details everywhere including a later black-painted surface and careful gold-leaf stenciling overall. Signed at bottom - though probably a prior owner label. Sold as a pair.
