1870S SWEDISH EMPIRE
spectacular Masur Birch four-drawer chest
spectacular Masur Birch four-drawer chest
A Swedish Karl Johan chest of drawers, c.1870, veneered in exceptionally figured masur birch. Four large drawers are faced with narrow sections of veneer selected and arranged to emphasize the swirling grain, dark flecks and extraordinary golden color of the wood. Simple block feet, four small keyhole escutcheons and no drawer pulls (typical of the period), which leaves the highly figured birch as virtually the only decoration. Exceptional.
