Very much in the French Louis XIII tradition of open spiral "colonnes torses" - twisted column structure used in the early 1600s that loosely followed the Italian Renaissance & Baroque spiral column example. The early romans of course did this in marble. The most intriguing piece here is the incredible hand carved solid walnut open spirals with large open voids - a very unusual French provincial cabinet making form of exceptional quality. The stretcher design is incredible. Probably a late 19th century revival - though could be much earlier - with a newer top.
