This pair of dated 1840 Swedish side chairs offers a refined example of transitional Swedish neoclassicism, bridging late Gustavian clarity and early Biedermeier simplicity. Most importantly - these are dated and stamped underneath O.P.W.B. (for Överintendentsämbetets P.W. Besiktning), literally Inspected by the Royal Board of Public Works and appears on furniture made for royal residences, official buildings, or nobility’s commissions. This solid birchwood pair has fluted, vase-form splats with carved reeding, floral rosettes on the crest rail, tapered legs with fine banding and inlaid detail at the seat rail. Exceptional piece of Swedish history. Sold as a pair.
