1830S KARL JOHAN
scroll arm mahogany armchair w/laurel leaf detail
scroll arm mahogany armchair w/laurel leaf detail
The Karl Johan style marks a transition from strict French Empire formality toward a lighter, more human-scaled Scandinavian classicism - an interpretation of Empire / late Neoclassical design, most prominent in Sweden and Norway between c. 1815–1845, during the reign of King Karl XIV Johan. This beautifully carved desk chair in solid lightly stained mahogany has scroll arms, a curved back and tapered legs. Newer velvet seating. Most unique is the floating back detail of an oval laurel wreath help by a shield and ribbon - perfectly Neoclassical.
