It's hard to undersell the importance of the Bauhaus movement for modernist design. The mid-1920s experimentation with tubular chrome pipe that could be used to form chairs without four legs was revolutionary. Such design work by Dutch architect Mart Stam (1899-1986) predates van de Rohe and Breuer. This Martin Stam chair is in its original condition with green-painted veneered plywood seats and solid wood arms. Created for Thonet-Mundus and produced in Thonet factory in Czechia 1930s.
